Papatahi
Set against the sweeping landscape of the Wairarapa, Papatahi was designed as a home that truly belongs to its surroundings. With uninterrupted views toward the Tararua Ranges, the house embraces its rural setting through form, materiality and carefully considered orientation. Long and low in its composition, the home stretches across the site, echoing the scale of the landscape and allowing each space to connect back to the outlook.
The exterior blends traditional country character with modern refinement. Board and batten cladding, deep overhanging and complex eaves, exposed rafters and generous covered verandas reference the classic rural homestead, while clean lines and contemporary detailing give the home a fresh architectural edge. Carefully crafted soffits and outriggers, add depth and texture to the exterior detailing. The result is a home that feels timeless yet distinctly modern.
Positioned to capture views from every angle, the design opens toward the landscape, creating a strong connection between indoor living spaces and the surrounding countryside.
Interior Living
Inside, the home continues the story of warmth and connection. Rough-sawn pine, laid in horizontal sarking across walls and ceilings, creates a grounded, rustic feel, complemented by soft natural finishes and a warm, tactile palette. High ceilings with exposed rafters and beams, and expansive windows bring in light and frame the rural outlook at every opportunity.
The open-plan kitchen and living areas form the heart of the home, designed for both everyday living and hosting. Timber joinery features throughout, paired with dark Roman brass hardware that adds a subtle sense of richness and contrast. The interiors take inspiration from the relaxed, textural character of the Black Barn accommodation in Hawke’s Bay - a style that designer, Andy Coltart has also contributed to through his work on similar accommodation projects in that region. The result is a home that balances texture, light and space to create a calm, welcoming environment - a true retreat from the pace of urban life.
Built Through Collaboration
This project is the result of many skilled trades working together to bring a shared vision to life. From structure through to the finishing details, the combined expertise and craftsmanship have created a home that sits comfortably in its environment while delivering quality, durability and comfort.
