Rototāwai Gallery

Commercial

Set within the established Rototāwai property, this new gallery is a considered extension of place - shaped by the site’s history and the legacy of the family who have occupied it over generations.

Working alongside Smart Alliances Ltd, Holmes Construction delivered a highly detailed, architectural build that carefully balances old and new. Traditional brickwork anchors the building to its surroundings, with a crafted feature wall adding texture, depth and a clear reference to the site’s past. In contrast, the interior is restrained and light-filled, with clean lines and generous volumes designed to let the artwork lead.

Created to house Anna Bidwell’s collection, the gallery brings together years of curation in a space that reflects both the significance of the work and the story behind it. It’s not just a place to display art, but one that acknowledges the history of the property and the family’s ongoing connection to it.

From a construction perspective, the project demanded precision at every level. Tight detailing, material transitions and a strong architectural intent required a disciplined approach on site, with every element carefully resolved to achieve a clean, resolved finish.

With plans to open for public viewings and events, Rototāwai Gallery extends beyond a private collection, offering a new cultural layer to the Wairarapa landscape, grounded in history but built for what’s next.

A strong, considered outcome - thoughtfully delivered.
